Carlos Fernández Aransay
ARCM obtained teaching degrees in piano, theory, harmony, counterpoint and
composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Music in Madrid. He studied singing at
the Escuela Superior de Canto, Madrid, where he also worked as an accompanist.
In 1988 he moved to London to study at the Royal College of Music, where he
completed post-graduate studies in composition and conducting. He then went on
to study conducting in Vienna for three years with Jacques Delacôte. In the
Czech Republic he has conducted the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic and Marienbad
Symphonic Orchestras and has also recorded a programme under the title Spain
in the Romantic Germanic Opera with the Pilsen Radio Orchestra. In 1993 he
became assistant conductor and chorus master of the Earls Court arena production
of Carmen, with which he traveled to Zurich, Munich and Berlin, working
with José Carreras, Simon Estes and the Ambrosian Opera Chorus. He has been an
assistant to Jacques Delacôte, John McCarthy, Simon Joly and Terry Edwards, and
has worked as an interpreter to Harry Cristophers, during masterclasses in
Granada, Spain. In London, he has sung as a solo tenor in recitals and operas.
In 2000 he was invited by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London to
give a masterclass on Hispanic vocal music. He teaches regularly in Peru,
Mexico, United Kingdom and Spain. As a conductor and chorus master, he has
collaborated with Blackheath Opera and the London Gay Symphony Orchestra and has
been Music Director of the Camden and Kingsway Symphony Orchestra. He is the
newly appointed Music Director of the International Singing Competition of
Trujillo, Peru. He has had several articles published and works premiered in
Madrid and London and translates for EMI Classics and Naxos. He has worked as
Festival Assistant of Spitalfields Festival, in London, and since 1998 is
Assistant Secretary of the Iberian and Latin American Music Society, ILAMS.
