Philip Barnes - Artistic Director
Born
in England, Philip Barnes was educated at the Manchester Grammar School, and
then at the universities of Bristol, of Manchester and at King's College,
London, receiving degrees in Latin & Greek, music, and education. He is also a
Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Philip Barnes sang in numerous British
choirs, including Bristol, Wells, and Hereford Cathedrals, and in London at St.
Margaret's Church Westminster, St. Martin's-in-the-fields, and the Tower of
London. In 1988 he accepted an appointment in the USA, to chair the Classics
department at the John Burroughs School, St. Louis, and soon added to this the
artistic directorship of the St. Louis Chamber Chorus, a prominent professional
chamber choir in the American Midwest. With this ensemble he has directed almost
one hundred different programmes, and earned an enviable reputation for the
breadth and depth of his repertoire. He has directed virtually all the a
cappella works by the German Romantics, together with most of the choral output
of Vaughan Williams, Holst and other leading British composers of the 20th
century. He is also very experienced in the performance of Renaissance works,
and has given countless American and world premières by some of today's leading
composers in the USA, Britain and around the globe.
Philip Barnes has performed on numerous television and radio broadcasts, sung on
movie soundtracks, and recorded twenty commercial discs, including seven with
the St. Louis Chamber Chorus. He has directed workshops in England and the USA,
and has performed either as a singer or a conductor in many European countries.
He co-founded the chamber ensemble MUSICA MISSOURI in 1998, and with this group
he has undertaken highly successful concert tours in Italy, Spain and Portugal.
