Coro Cervantes
was founded in 1995 by Carlos Fernández Aransay, under the auspices of the
Instituto Cervantes in London, where it is based. It is the United Kingdom' s
only professional choir dedicated solely to the Hispanic classical repertoire.
Since its debut at the Spanish Embassy in London in 1996, Coro Cervantes has
performed at different venues in London - St. James’s Spanish Place, Colegio
Español, St. Paul’s Knightsbridge, St. James’s Piccadilly, St. John’s Smith
Square, The Foreign Office, St. Etheldreda’s, Bolívar Hall -, in the U.K. -
Peterborough Cathedral, Ilkley International Literature Festival, Exeter College
(Oxford), Great Hall in Winchester, International Mediaeval Congress in Leeds -,
and abroad - Mexico: 26th Festival Internacional Cervantino (Guanajuato),
Celaya, Festival Cervantes en todas partes, (Irapuato) Russia: 2nd
International Festival of Latin American Culture, and Spain: National Heritage
Festival, Valladolid. Coro Cervantes performs regularly at the Instituto
Cervantes in London and Manchester. Its performances have bee broadcasted by
Spanish National Radio and the BBC World Service among others. It has
collaborated with the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre Education Centre, Federico
García Lorca Foundation, National Society for the Commemoration of the
Centenaries of Charles I and Philip II, The Historical Association of Great
Britain, Xunta de Galicia, the Hispanic Faculty of Exeter College (Oxford),
Leeds University, the Venezuelan Embassy in the U.K., Save the children
foundation (Mexico) and the Relief fund for the victims of Hurricane Mitch. It
has received awards from the Spanish Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs.
Programmes have focused on some important figures and events of Hispanic
culture: Miguel de Cervantes, Federico García Lorca, Mary Tudor, Charles I and
Philip II of Spain, St. James of Compostela, Pedro Calderón de la Barca,
Catherine of Aragon, etc. In 1998 Coro Cervantes sang in London the British
premiere of the Missa Philippus Rex Hispaniæ, by Bartolomé de Escobedo. Their
first recording, "O Crux" was chosen by Gramophone magazine in December 2002 as
one of the "CDs of the Year/Critics' Choice".
