The Choir of St. George's Chapel, Windsor

There has been a choir at St. George's Chapel, Windsor for over 600 years and even today, the long tradition of daily sung services is maintained by the 16 Choristers and 12 Lay-Clerks you will hear on this recording.

The boys of the choir are all pupils at St. George's School, within the precincts of the Castle, and the 12 Lay-Clerks (4 Altos, 4 Tenors and 4 Basses) reside in the Horseshoe Cloister, a group of timbered houses round a courtyard, built in the shape of the horseshoe badge of King Edward IV.

In presenting this recording we have tried to reflect some of the continuing musical life within St. George's Chapel, and it is therefore fitting that five of the items should be the music of three former Organists and a recent Director of Music.

The Chapel is famous for its Great Occasions and these reflect not only the importance of the statutory choral Services but also some of the Royal and State Occasions which take place here in the Queen's Free Chapel of St. George. Among these is the annual Service of the Order of the Garter, when the Knights of the Order, together with H.M. The Queen, process through the Castle to the Chapel for their Festival Service. There are also more solemn occasions which include memorial Services and the recent funerals of HRH The Duke of Gloucester and HRH The Pricess Alice.
