Tim Gill - Cello

Timothy Gill began to play the cello at the age of eight, studying with Judith Bird and Florence Hooton. In 1981 he was awarded the Associated Board's Gold Medal for cello.

On leaving school in 1982, Tim went to study with the eminent Swiss cellist Dimitry Markevitch at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. In 1983 he took up a place at Magdalene College, Cambridge to read Music, continuing his cello studies privately with Christopher Bunting. Having graduated from University in 1986, he subsequently studied with David Strange and Lynn Harrell at the Royal Academy of Music where he won many solo and chamber music prizes, including the Recital Diploma and Suggia Award.

From 1989-90 Tim was resident artist at the Banff Centre Canada where, as a result of winning the Banff Concerto Competition, he was invited to play the Elgar concerto with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and later to tour Canada as a recitalist. His Purcell Room debut in 1990 was met with critical acclaim and resulted in an invitation from the Park Lane Group to give the Priaulx Rainier Memorial Concert with Fali Pavri. He has since given recitals and played concertos throughout the U.K. and Europe. Recently Tim has also undertaken successful tours of India and Sri Lanka with Fali Pavri.

Tim now freelances in London where he is much in demand both as a soloist and chamber musician. He has been invited to play principal cello with the London Sinfonietta, the Northern Sinfonia and City of London Sinfonia, and he regularly performs with the Nash Ensemble and is a member of the Chagall Trio.
