Christopher Hogwood - Conductor
Since founding The Academy of Ancient Music in 1973, of which he is still the Director, he has also encouraged this period-instrument ensemble to commission contemporary pieces, with some considerable successes with works by John Tavener, David Bedford and John Woolrich. Hogwood has a celebrated catalogue of recordings with The AAM on the Decca label. Current recording projects include a series reflecting the genius of Paul Sacher as patron of the music of his time with the Kammerorchester Basel on the Arte Nova label ;MartinÛ’s works for violin and orchestra with the Czech Philharmonic and Bohuslav Matou‰ek on Supraphon; and the complete Gade symphonies with theDanish Radio Symphony Orchestra on Chandos. In addition to the Kammerorchester Basel, Hogwood works regularly with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, Tonhalle Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Tokyo Philharmonic,the Symphony Australia orchestras and many other international ensembles; he is Conductor Laureate of Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society. In opera he has worked with Opera Australia, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Royal Opera Stockholm, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Chorégies d’Orange and Houston Grand Opera. His many publications include a survey of patronage through the ages (Music at Court), a biography of Handel (Thames and Hudson), a history of the trio sonata(BBC Publications), investigations of British music and many editions of keyboard and orchestral music from the sixteenth century onwards. Hogwood’s academic positions include Fellowships at Jesus and Pembroke Colleges, Cambridge, Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and he works regularly at Harvard University. Christopher
Hogwood conducts repertoire ranging from the baroque to contemporary, his
readings sustained by a philosophy of revealing the composer’s original
sound-world. For more than forty years he has been performing music of the
twentieth century, with a particular affinity for the neo-baroque and
neo-classical schools including many works by Stravinsky, Martin Û and Tippett.
