Alfons Kontarsky - Piano


Alfons Kontarsky, was born in 1932 in Iserlohn–Westfalen, Germany. He studied at Cologne University with Else Schmitz-Gohr and at the University of Hamburg with Eduard Erdmann. In 1955 he (together with his brother Alois) was awarded first prize for Piano Duo in the ARD competition in Munich, marking the start of a high-rising international career as “Klavierduo Kontarsky“ giving concerts in all the important musical centres of the world and recordings with Bärenreiter, EMI and Deutsche Grammophon. Since 1951 he has remained in touch with the most recent developments in modern music through participation in numerous international summer schools and has given the premières of works by Zimmermann, Stockhausen and others. He is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and of the “German Musikrats” and holds professorships at Music Universities in Cologne, Munich and Salzburg.
