The Choir of Lincoln College

lincoln.jpg (27012 Byte)The Choir of Lincoln College is made up of students at Oxford University. The director and organist and most of our singers are at Lincoln College itself. Our term-time singing centres on the services sung weekly in the College Chapel and on the extraordinarily rich musical life of Oxford. In February 1998 the choir sang in the world premières of John Caldwell's opera-oratorio Good Friday, written for the musicians of Lincoln, Jesus and Exeter Colleges. The present disc was recorded in Exeter College Chapel after our 1998 tour to Venice, Florence and Piedmont. This is the choir's third disc. It follows the success of Magnificat: The Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Music, which was acclaimed on its issue in 1997. We acknowledge with gratitude the continued support of the College and its Old Members; it was thanks to their generosity that we could commission A Peace Prayer from Philip Wilby, premièred in our College Chapel in June 1998 and here recorded for the first time.

It is sixty years since Prime Minister Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement with Hitler, September 1938, and told the cheering crowds in Downing Street: 'I believe it is peace for our time.' Within a year the young men and women of Europe were once more under arms. At their age we are singing in an Oxford chapel music pleading for the peace they were not given. We know how blessed we are. This disc is issued in thanksgiving that two World Wars have not been followed by a third.

The Choir of Lincoln College, Oxford is now widely regarded as the finest mixed voice college choir in Oxford. The success of the critically acclaimed CDs Magnificat and Peace in Our Time, also available from Guild, has served further to enhance the choir’s growing reputation, as has its increasingly busy touring schedule. The Choir’s principal role, however, remains singing the office of evensong in the College Chapel each Sunday during term. Its members are drawn principally from within the College itself, but also include a number of the most talented singers from throughout the University. Auditions are held at the start of each academic year, and competition for the few available places is fierce. During vacations, the Choir tours widely: in the last five years, it has sung concerts and services throughout England, Italy, Switzerland and Cyprus. Of the Choir’s recent CDs for Guild Music, Peace in Our Time proved an instant success, with BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM both using music from the CD for their Remembrance Sunday broadcasts in 1998. The Choir has a well established tradition of commissioning new music, and is to record Philip Wilby’s Passion of Our Times in the year 2000.

The Choir of Lincoln College

MAGNIFICAT

The College of the Blessed Virgin Mary and All Saints, Lincoln, in the University of Oxford’ was founded in 1427 for the study of theology, to train and strengthen priests against heresy. It is a dedication that we do not forget; the College crest bears the Virgin and Child, and the Chapel’s own windows of 1630 show the Virgin on Christ’s right hand at the Last Supper.
The College choir, of men and women studying at Lincoln College and elsewhere in Oxford University, sings the weekly services in this Chapel. Each year the choir travels to Europe to bring its music to a wider audience. On 2nd July 1997 the choir was presented to the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, in Rome, and on the steps of St. Peter’s sang to him Górecki’s Totus tuus sum, Maria, ten years (almost to the day) since its first performance to celebrate the Pope’s return to Warsaw in 1987.

The Choir of Lincoln College Oxford

choirlc.jpg (21786 Byte). Lincoln College Choir enjoys the reputation of being one of the finest mixed voice chapel choirs in the University of Oxford. Since the 1994 release of our first CD, Sing Praises Out, the choir’s output has increased dramatically, with six recordings since 1997, and several successful foreign tours. In addition to this, the choir continues to sing at weekly services held in the College Chapel.

We have toured in recent years to a variety of locations around the world. In July 1997 the choir was presented to the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, and sang to him Górecki’s Totus tuus sum, Maria on the steps of St. Peter’s in Rome. In 1999 we visited Cyprus under the patronage of the First Lady, and in 2000 flew to the United States to sing in Boston and Maine.

Our recent recordings have reflected the choir’s continuing success. Our two previous CDs, Magnificat and Peace In Our Time, were released to critical acclaim, while the 2000 recording of John Caldwell’s Good Friday went on to become a Classic FM Magazine Record of the Month.
