It is sixty years since Prime Minister Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement with
Hitler, September 1938, and told the cheering crowds in Downing Street: 'I believe it is
peace for our time.' Within a year the young men and women of Europe were once more under
arms. At their age we are singing in an Oxford chapel music pleading for the peace they
were not given. We know how blessed we are. This disc is issued in thanksgiving that two
World Wars have not been followed by a third.
and
Peace in Our Time, also available from
Guild, has served further to enhance the choirs growing reputation, as has its
increasingly busy touring schedule. The Choirs principal role, however, remains
singing the office of evensong in the College Chapel each Sunday during term. Its members
are drawn principally from within the College itself, but also include a number of the
most talented singers from throughout the University. Auditions are held at the start of
each academic year, and competition for the few available places is fierce. During
vacations, the Choir tours widely: in the last five years, it has sung concerts and
services throughout England, Italy, Switzerland and Cyprus. Of the Choirs recent CDs
for Guild Music, Peace in Our Time
proved an instant success, with BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM both using music from the CD
for their Remembrance Sunday broadcasts in 1998. The Choir has a well established
tradition of commissioning new music, and is to record Philip Wilbys Passion of Our Times in the year 2000.

The Choir of Lincoln College
MAGNIFICAT
The College of the Blessed Virgin Mary and All Saints, Lincoln, in the
University of Oxford was founded in 1427 for the study of theology, to train and
strengthen priests against heresy. It is a dedication that we do not forget; the College
crest bears the Virgin and Child, and the Chapels own windows of 1630 show the
Virgin on Christs right hand at the Last Supper.
The College choir, of men and women studying at Lincoln College and elsewhere in Oxford
University, sings the weekly services in this Chapel. Each year the choir travels to
Europe to bring its music to a wider audience. On 2nd July 1997 the choir was presented to
the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, in Rome, and on the steps of St. Peters sang to
him Góreckis Totus tuus sum, Maria, ten years (almost to the day) since its
first performance to celebrate the Popes return to Warsaw in 1987.

The Choir of Lincoln College Oxford
. Lincoln College Choir enjoys the reputation of being one of
the finest mixed voice chapel choirs in the University of Oxford. Since the 1994 release
of our first CD, Sing Praises Out, the choirs output has increased
dramatically, with six recordings since 1997, and several successful foreign tours. In
addition to this, the choir continues to sing at weekly services held in the College
Chapel.
We have toured in recent years to a variety of locations around the world. In
July 1997 the choir was presented to the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, and sang to him
Góreckis Totus tuus sum, Maria on the steps of St. Peters in Rome. In
1999 we visited Cyprus under the patronage of the First Lady, and in 2000 flew to the
United States to sing in Boston and Maine.
Our recent recordings have reflected the choirs continuing success. Our
two previous CDs, Magnificat and Peace In Our Time, were released to
critical acclaim, while the 2000 recording of John Caldwells Good Friday went
on to become a Classic FM Magazine Record of the Month. The choir has featured recently

The Choir of Lincoln College, Oxford
Lincoln College Choir is widely regarded as one of the
finest mixed voice chapel choirs in the University of Oxford. Its main role is to sing at
the principal services in the College Chapel, but it also tours widely and has released a
number of CDs. Recent CDs include O Magnum Mysterium (GMCD 7226); Good Friday

Lincoln Windows was first performed in Lincoln Cathedral, and
the college is proud of its links with the cathedral, city and county of Lincoln. We are
grateful to Philip Wilby, who wrote this piece for us, and to Nigel Lyndsey-Renton who
commissioned it.
