Philip Moore was born in 1943. He has degrees and diplomas from
Durham University, the Royal College of Music and the Royal College of Organists. He won
several prizes for organ playing whilst he was a student.
In 1965 he was appointed to the music staff at Eton and in 1968 he became Assistant
Organist at Canterbury Cathedral when Dr Allan Wicks was Organist.
In 1974 he succeeded Dr Barry Rose as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Guildford
Cathedral. Here he recorded both as a choir director and as an organ soloist. In 1983 he
moved to York Minster to succeed Dr Francis Jackson as Organist and Master of the Music.
His work in the Minster is wide-ranging, but his chief concern is for the daily round of
practices and services. The Choir has recorded several times over the years and has toured
the USA four times. There have also been visits to Holland, Poland, Belgium and Sweden.
Philip Moore also conducts the York Musical Society, a chorus of one hundred and twenty
voices. As well as exploring the standard oratorio repertoire, the chorus has explored
some of the lesser known works of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Philip Moore is active as an organ recitalist and has given recitals throughout the
British Isles as well as abroad. He is also in demand as a composer and has written
extensively for choirs and organs as well as for chamber ensembles and orchestras. He has
also written several cantatas for chorus and orchestra and in 1997 a CD of his organ and
choral works was released.
