Jósef Olechowski - Piano
 Józef Olechowski was born in
Poland and began his piano studies at the age of five. Showing early promise, he continued
his musical studies both in his hometown as well as in the Music Academy at Katowice.
Later in his student life he moved to Mexico where he finished his studies and began to
earn his living as a musician.He won prizes in successive years at the Frederick Chopin
Institute in Warsaw and in 1981 won first prize in the International Piano Competition in
Puebla, Mexico. In 1988 he was named "Best Foreign Pianist Resident in Mexico"
by the newspaper Claridades, and now has Mexican citizenship.
Józef has given concerts and recitals in his native Poland and in other European
countries as well as the United States and Mexico. He is in particular demand as a chamber
musician and has recently formed a Piano Trio with his two brothers, violinist Kazimierz
and cellist Janusz. He also spent several years working in Los Angeles as a composer,
arranger and music director for television and films.
Józef is recognised as one of the leading pianists in Mexico and has had more than a
dozen CDs, many featuring Mexican music in which he is an acknowledged expert. He has made
many tours abroad, most recently in Europe and Japan.In the past six years he has worked
extensively in the duo with Elena Durán. They first met when they played together as part
of a television tribute to Mozart in 1991 and came together again for the Cervantino
International Festival later that year. The collaboration proved so successful that they
have given many concerts together in Mexico, USA, Australia and New Zealand. They have
also made their first recording together which will be released later this year.
