Jonathan Rees - Violin

reesj.jpg (12615 Byte)Jonathan Rees began playing the violin when he was seven, and continued his studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School. While he was there he was chosen for numerous recital and concert performances at home and abroad, including appearances at the Windsor, Gstaad and Llandaff Festivals, and three tours of the Netherlands.

In 1978 he was a prize-winner in the BBC Young Musician of the Year and in 1979 won first prize in the Royal Overseas League Competition. Later that year he won scholarships and awards including one from the Julliard to study in New York with Dorothy Delay.

In recent years he has established a growing reputation as one of the leading British violinists of his generation. He has appeared at the Festivals of Bath, City of London, Brighton and Salisbury. He has played with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, the Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras and given recitals at St. David's Hall, the Fairfield Halls, the Queen's Hall, Edinburgh, and the South Bank.

In 1987 Jonathan Rees was appointed Artistic Director of the Scottish Ensemble. In his capacity as soloist/director he has gained the ensemble and international reputation through extensive national and international touring.
