Nancy Ruffer - Flute

ruffern.jpg (12911 Byte)Nancy Ruffer was born in Detroit, Michigan. Upon graduating from The University of Michigan in 1976, she was awarded a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship to study at The Royal Academy of Music in London, and she has remained in London working as a free-lance flautist specialising in contemporary music and performing with various ensembles including Music Projects/London, Matrix, Topologies and The Almeida Ensemble, and ensembles at The Royal National Theatre. In addition, she has performed both as soloist and chamber player for the BBC as well as playing in festivals and concert halls throughout Britain, Europe, the U.S.A., Canada and the Caribbean.

Nancy is active in working with and commissioning composers, and has had numerous pieces written for her. She has premiered many works for flute both in Britain and abroad. She is currently recording a CD of compositions written specifically for her.

In 1984 Nancy was awarded the Kranichsteiner Prize for Performance at Darmstadt, Germany and recently was elected an Associate of The Royal Academy of Music, London. She teaches at Kingšs College School, Cambridge and Middlesex University. In addition to her duo with Helen Crayford, she performs regularly with harpist Hugh Webb.
