Matthew Steynor was Organ Scholar at Queens’ College, Cambridge from 1998-2001. A former chorister of Guildford Cathedral, he held scholarships at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, where he studied the organ with Geoffrey Morgan, followed by a year at the Junior Organ Conservatoire of London (now St Giles Junior Conservatoire). He is an experienced organist and accompanist, most notably having provided acclaimed support for Queens’ College Choir’s Flight of Song disc.

Under Matthew’s nine month tenure as Senior Organ Scholar the choir sang Evensong in St Paul’s Cathedral, London, toured Germany and Switzerland and performed a concert featuring two of J.S. Bach’s earliest cantatas to a packed-out chapel. This disc, featuring twentieth century English composers, is a culmination of the choir’s work over the year, having covered a diverse repertoire including works by Gesualdo, Arvo Pärt, Tippett and Poulenc.

Matthew’s conducting experience also extends to orchestras, having also been appointed conductor of the Cambridge University Music Society Wind Orchestra for the duration of his tenure as Senior Organ Scholar. In September 2001 he began training for the Postgraduate Certificate of Education, and was appointed Assistant Organist at Cambridge University Church. He then intends to emigrate to The Bahamas to become Director of the Men and Boys Choir and Assistant Organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Nassau.
