The Hampstead Singers
The Hampstead Singers were founded in 1990 by their musical director, Mark Denza, shortly after he joined the London College of Music. Its membership chiefly comprises fellow singers from the many choirs with which he has been associated, together with music students, past and present. Choral services at Hampstead churches form the basis of activity, but the group has also given a cappella concerts, and performed in conjunction with various instrumental ensembles, as well as appearing at central London venues. Their repertoire has embraced many contrasting musical styles and eras, though this recording reflects a predilection for the twentieth century. Distinguished guest conductors with whom the Hampstead Singers have been privileged to work include Paul Spicer, Hilary Davan Wetton, Ronald Corp, Stephen Jackson, and Geoffrey Mitchell. Recent highlights include a live broadcast of Radio Fours Daily Service from St. Marys, Holly Place, Hampstead; a concert accompanied by the Wallace Collection; and a choral evensong with full orchestra at Westminster Central Hall. A live cassette recording has previously been released of a sacred music concert, given at the Tyburn Convent in aid of their restoration appeal; but this is the choirs debut appearance on CD.
