Geoffrey Webber

webberg.jpg (9217 Byte)Tmusical education began as a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral under Richard Seal, and then continued as Music Scholar at The King's School, Worcester, where his teachers included Christopher Robinson, Harry Bramma and Paul Trepte.  In 1977 he was elected to an Organ Scholarship at New College, Oxford, where his organ teachers included Gillian Weir and Nicholas Danby.  After graduating with a First in Music he took the further degrees of M.Phil. and D. Phil., combining this with activites as both organist and choir director.  He became Assisting Organist at Magdalen College in 1982 and was appointed as University Organist and Director of Music at the University Church in 1984.  During this time he also served as Director of the Edington Music Festival, a festival of music and liturgy,  at Edington, Wiltshire.  In 1989 he was appointed Precentor and Director of Studies in Music at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge (in succession to Charles Wood, Patrick Hadley and Peter Tranchell). He now divides his time between research, conducting, organ playing, editing and teaching.  He also serves on the publishing committees of the Church Music Society and the Royal College of Organists, and his publications include North German Church Music in the Age of Buxtehude (OUP, 1996) and, as co-editor, the Cambridge Companion to the Organ (CUP, 1998).
