MATTIA
ZAPPA -
Cello
“Elegiac
minutes…wonderful cello!
To
listen to this one instrument and its dialogue with the piano for a whole
evening – that means not a single second of boredom with the Zappa.Mainolfi duet
in the chamber music concert-hall of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.”
(The
Tagesspiegel Berlin) “Dynamic musical fun” (Neue Presse Coburg).
After
completing the Matura and his bachelor qualification at the Lugano Conservatory,
the Tessine cellist continued his musical studies in the soloist class of Harvey
Shapiro at the renowned Juilliard School in New York. He completed his soloist
diploma with distinction at the Basle Music Academy under Thomas Demenga. There
followed a master f’ for sonata repertoire at the Accademia Pianistica of Imola
(Bologna) under the baton of Pier Narciso Masi. A year prior to this, he was
awarded the European Music Förderpreis “for artistic talent and excellent
performance” for his interpretation of the Rococo variations by Tchaikowsky.
Mattia Zappa was engaged several times as a soloist by the Orchestra della
Svizzera Italiana, the Basle Symphonic Orchestra, the Festival Strings Lucerne
(where he also played as a solo cellist from 2000 to 2002), by the Academy
Orchestra of Zurich (Akademisches Orchester Zürich), the Swiss Chamber
Philharmonic (Schweizer Kammerphilharmonie), the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève
and by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Since September 2000 Mattia
Zappa has been a member with a special contract with the Zurich Tonhalle
Orchestra, and has been asked to act as a temporary assistant for the Berlin
Philharmonic Orchestra since 2006. There are numerous duet recitals with the
Italian pianist Massimiliano Mainolfi. They gave their mutual Carnegie Hall
debut in March 2001. In 2003 there followed the debut in the chamber music
concert-hall of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Last year the Zappa.Mainolfi
duet performed at distinguished European centres in Germany, Holland, Belgium,
Scandinavia, France, South Africa, Switzerland and Italy. They are prize winners
of several international chamber music competitions, among others the Premio
Vittorio Gui (Florence), the G.B. Viotti (Vercelli), the Concorso Città di
Pinerolo (Turin), the Concorso Trio di Trieste. Numerous radio and CD
recordings, among others with Ducale-Label, Lyra Classica,
Schweizer Radio and Deutschland Radio Berlin. Mattia Zappa plays a
beautiful Gabbrielli cello from the year 1758. In 2007 he will go on tour with
