DDD Total Time = 63.39 - Recorded in St George's Church, Chesterton, June 1991 In Medieval monastic and collegiate communities, the Compline Service was the last of the daytime services. The monks and clerks would then sleep for a few hours before waking for Matins at midnight. At the reformation the English Church compressed these services into two; Matins and Evensong. In the wake of the high church revival and encouraged by those who wished to sing plainsong, Compline has now been revived in some churches. The service is recorded here followed by music either for Compline or with texts and music of an appropriate mood. There are Motets and Anthems from Tallis, Byrd and lesser-known figures Robert White and John Sheppard. The ultimate effect is one of great calm and tranquillity. The famous Clare College Choir are in top form and give total commitment, further helped by an exquisitely warm and atmospheric recording.
