The Choir of the great Cathedral of Canterbury is heir to a great tradition of music making, stretching back beyond St. Thomas à Becket to St. Augustine, who began his mission to convert the English to Christianity here. Augustine himself was appointed the first Archbishop of Canterbury in AD 601.

This remarkable tradition is well demonstrated in these spirited performances of a wide range of English music, extending through five centuries. Some of the best known, as well as some lesser known English composers are featured on this recording, made in the fine acoustic of the Cathedral. Each of the eleven items makes a worthy contribution to a rich musical tradition.
