ADD Total Time = 73.42 - Digitally Remastered 1996 This unique album couples the two greatest Cathedral Organs in the whole of the island of Ireland - St. Patricks Cathedral in Dublin and Down Cathedral. The program is of wide appeal - and not only to organ specialist, who have eagerly awaited the release of just such an album as this - for the music includes rarely-heard pieces alongside perennial favourites. The Organ Music of Sir Charles Stanford occupies a prominent place in his large output, and on this CD we have the magnificent Organ Sonata no 4, the "Sonata Celtica", written at the conclusion of World War I alongside a selection of some of his shorter pieces. There is other Irish organ music from Charles Wood and from John Dexter, who on the St. Patricks Cathedral organ also plays his own Study on "The Londonderry air" (Danny Boy). Completing the program are J.S. Bachs Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Widors Toccata from the Fifth Symphony, C.S. Langs Tuba Tune and C.H. Kitsons Communion on an Irish Air. The organists on this disc are John Dexter, at the St. Patricks Cathedral instrument, and Francis Jackson, playing the organ at Down Cathedral. The booklet also includes details on the history of these two magnificent instruments. A must for all interested in the King of Instruments.
