The music of the French master Léon Boëllmann, who was only 32 when he died in 1897, is known to few people today - mainly through his masterly Suite Gothique for organ, which became so popular that he was obliged to transcribe several of its movement for other instruments.

But Boëllmann was a composer of great promise: his contribution to the repertoire of the cello was the most important of any French composer of his day, and this album includes several first recordings. It includes his delightful Suite for Cello and Piano, his superb Cello Sonata Opus 40, and the comparatively well-known Symphonic Variations.

In addition, the album is completed by several short pieces, making a fascinating and revelatory insight into this unjustly neglected composer’s music. The cellist, Oliver Gledhill, has already made an enviable reputation as one of the finest of all young cellists in the UK, keen to seek unusual repertoire, and he is accompanied by the brilliant young Jeremy Filsell.

With the growing interest in the byways of music of this period, this CD is sure to find a unique place in any collection. The recordings are first-class in every respect.
