The Zentralbibliothek Zürich (Zurich Central Library) possesses what is probably the largest collection of Kaysers works, including the autograph of his singspiel Scherz, List und Rache and the rare first editions of the works recorded here. Also represented on this CD is Kaysers contemporary Johann David Brünings. Neither his date of birth nor that of his death is known. We know only that he came from Hessen, lived in Zurich from the mid-1780s until 1799, and thereafter departed for St Petersburg. Of his further career, nothing is known at all. David Hess, a member of Kaysers masonic lodge and a friend of both men, wrote that [Brünings was] just as excellent an eccentric as our brother Kayser . . . These two men, so similar in nature, never came together, although they lived for ten years in the same place. Far removed from any petty tradesmans jealousy, they spoke with great respect of each other, but neither wished to take steps that would have led to closer relations with the other. And so they remained apart who could have done so much together. Neither of these excellent musicians ever even heard the other play. Of Brünings compositions, only three opus numbers are known to have survived: three piano sonatas op. 1; three piano sonatinas op. 2; and three piano trios op. 3. The only known copy of the sonatas op. 1 of which Nos. 2 and 3 are recorded here is held by the Zentralbibliothek Zürich. Brünings is of importance to the history of music in Zurich, not least because he was the teacher of Hans Georg Nägeli, the Zurich pedagogue and music publisher. It was also Nägeli who published Brünings sonatas. The works of Kayser and Brünings are all recorded here for the very first time. Together with our CD of the music of Anton Liste (Guild Music CD 7154), we believe that the present recording is an excellent witness to the vigour of musical life in Zurich at the end of the 18th century Page revised Wednesday M ay 09 2007 |
