Edward Bairstow

Edward Bairstow was an apprentice to Frederick Bridge at Westminster Abbey, then, after periods as organist at Wigan and Leeds parish churches, succeeded Tertius Noble at York in 1913; he remained there until his death.

The Lamentation (O.U.P.), written in 1942, is headed for use as an altemative to the Benedicite in Lent, or any other suitable occasion and comprises verses from the Lamentations of Jeremiah (selected by the Dean of York, E. M. Milner-White) and set in the style of Anglican chant.
