Alan Ridout (1934- 1996)Alan Ridout lived in Canterbury for more than 25 years, during which time he had been closely associated with the music in the Cathedral. Many of his compositions have been written for the building, with the sound of the choir and organ in mind, and several of these have already been recorded. Jacob and the Angel was written for Allan Wicks in 1985, as a birthday present, and is now recorded for the first time. It is based on the 32nd Chapter of the Book of Genesis and contrasts the loud and earthy sound of the full organ with the more ethereal timbre of the soft strings and flutes.
