The Organ of Neumünster Zurich

Die Alte Tonhalle-Orgel im Neumünster

(The old Tonhalle Organ in the Neumünster)

Built by Kuhn AG, Männedorf (1872 / 1926 / restored 1995)

Mechanical action with Barkermaschine System Kuhn, electrical register action, 128 electronic stops.

The organ was built in 1872 for the old Tonhalle on what is today’s Sechseläutenplatz in Zürich. In 1895 it was moved into the new Tonhalle on the General Guisan-Quai. And there it was enlarged and stylistically brought up-to-date in 1926/27.

When it became known in 1985 that the now rather old organ was to be replaced by a new instrument considerable resistance developed in organists’ circles; they feared, justifiably, the loss of a valuable, historic instrument. As result the instrument was removed and stored.  When searching for a new home the Zurich Neumünsterkirche with its splendid acoustics, which had been built in 1836-39, was an obvious choice.

The project was prepared during 1987-1991 and restoration and reconstruction followed in the years 1992-1994. In January 1995 the instrument was opened in the Neumünster with 52, mainly old manuals in its old housing and with new technical equipment.
