The Organ of
The Chapel of Queens’ College, Cambridge
The organ installed in
Bodley and Garner’s new chapel in Queens was built in 1892 by James J. Binns of
Bramley, Leeds; the case is by Bodley. It is almost unique amongst the organs of
Cambridge with its wide range of orchestral colours; of particular subtlety is
the enclosed swell organ, which boasts a huge dynamic and coloristic range and
excellent blend. The specification of the instrument remains unchanged from the
time it was built and, although the winding system and action have been altered
over the years, there have been no apparent tonal changes, thus rendering the
instrument an important monument to the work of Binns. In 2002, the organ was
restored and the console and action modernised by Harrison and Harrison of
Durham.
