St. John's, Duncan Terrace, Islington
Organ Specification
The Organ at Saint John's was built in 1963 by J.W Walker and was
renovated in 1991 by Keith Bance.
The instrument was conceived in the North European style and has a gallery position
with a Rückpositive, but is able to play music of many periods because of its combination
of classical or open foot voiced flute work, and French-style reeds. The Swell Trumpet
contains original Cavaillé-Col shallots while the Bassoon and Crumhorn are of the open
English style. There are some pipes on the Great from the previous instrument by Bishop,
Starr and Richardson. The organ has been used for many for recordings, BBC broadcasts and,
more recently, CDs by Adrian Gunning and Jeremy Filsell.
It is considered by many to be one of Walker's landmark instruments from this period.
