The Organ of Tonbridge School Chapel

Organ Specifications

The Chapel of Tonbridge School was destroyed by fire in September 1988 leaving only the exterior fabric of most of the wall structure but obliterating the entire contents of the interior. Three burnt keyboards and unrecognisable fragments of wood and metal were all that were left of the Binns instrument originally built in 1909.

The final decision to commission an organ by the Danish firm of Marcussen & Son was made in 1993. The on-site construction began in March 1995 and the final stages of voicing were completed in October that year. The organ was voiced by Olav Oussoren.

Marcussen & Son was founded in 1806, and has been on its present site in Aabenraa since 1830 and is run by a direct descendant of the founder. The company is the largest organ builder in Scandinavia, employing about sixty people, and building between ten and twelve organs each year.
