GMCD 7110 - Creator Spirit
A 20th Century Choral Anthology
Source: The Organ, Vol. 75 no. 295
As a series of performances this is truly an outstanding disc, though not all the items
strike me as profoundly interesting.
Alan Gray's settings of sonnets by Rupert Brooke have a dated air, whilst Easdale's Ubi
Caritas et Amor and Bourgeois' Harvest Anthem strike one as little better than
competent gabrauchsmusik. On the other hand the cherubic boys' tone in two sets of Sacred
Songs for Treble Voices by Ridout is irresistible, the rhythmic panache of Mathias's Festival
Te Deum, the rock-like splendour of Naylor's Vox Dicentis, Clama and the
profound spirituality of Harris' Faire is The Heaven make this a disc to treasure.
