Review GMCD 7377 - Volkmar Andreae
Guild has issued three CDs in recent years of chamber music by Volkmar Andreae (1879-1962), best known, of course, as a conductor. I was certainly impressed by its release of Andreae’s complete quartets (reviewed in December 2009), as was Raymond Tuttle in the June 2007 and March 2011 issues. The re-evaluation of Andreae as a composer takes a major step forward, however, with the present disc of four orchestral works presented by the composer’s grandson – himself a distinguished conductor – in world premiere recordings. The music is both characterful and delightful ....

The attractive title of this release, 'Poetry in Music', is incorrectly listed in the on-screen information of the DVD player on which I plated the disc as 'Poetry in Motion'. Notwithstanding, the Swiss pianist Andrea Wiesli has assembled an interesting programme, two of whose four composers are less than well known....
