Though little-known today, many of the works of Georg Schumann were hugely popular during his lifetime (1866-1952) and were performed all over Europe and in the US. Despite the fact that all the works on this disc are receiving their world premiere recording, they are wonderful pieces that will delight and astonish the listener.
Critics have described the composer’s works (from an earlier disc by the Purcell Singers) as “revelatory” and “deliciously attractive” (Gramophone). Using a harmonic language that is firmly rooted in German romanticism, yet unique and often surprising, these works are written on an awesome scale and continue the tradition of Brahms, Strauss and Reger.
The Purcell Singers, one of London’s leading chamber choirs, are joined on two of the tracks by a brass chorus and by soprano soloists Geraldine McGreevy and Mary Nelson.
