In the USA Light Music enjoyed great popularity during the middle years of the last century. Some of the ‘household names’ such as Mantovani and Melachrino actually came from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, but there were plenty of excellent ‘home grown’ orchestras as well. Among the giants were Andre Kostelanetz, Percy Faith, Leroy Anderson, David Rose and Morton Gould, but many others were present on the scene as well, sometimes enjoying considerable chart success – Hugo Winterhalter and Monty Kelly being just two examples. Radio had been a big influence since the 1930s, but the popularity of the long-playing record in the 1950s ensured that music lovers would continue to demand tuneful music, tastefully arranged and performed. Among the best-known works there were many hidden ‘gems’ – now long overdue for a welcome revival.
