Duo Gough - Duo

Biography of Duo Gough:

The Gough Duo was formed in 1997 to explore the repertoire of music for violin and organ. Being the only regular violin and organ duo in Britain their performances have aroused much interest and they now pursue a busy concert career across the U.K. Recent invitations have included performing a commission for the Incorporated Association of Organists congress in Oxford and contributing to the 3rd Karg-Elert Festival. This is their first recording together during a year that will also see them touring in the U.S.A. The Gough Duo has a broad concert repertoire and is committed to performing new music. They are currently commissioning a work from Timothy Salter to be premièred at St. John’s, Smith Square, London. Rupert and Rachel were married in 1994 and live in the Cathedral Close in Wells, Somerset. Rachel Gough learnt the violin with Gillian Sansom for eleven years before attending the University of East Anglia. There she gained a First Class degree in music and won performance scholarships enabling her to study with Hugh Maguire. With a scholarship from The Wall Trust she entered the Royal College of Music, studying with Frances Mason and receiving regular chamber music coaching from the Chilingirian Quartet. She graduated in 1997 with a Master’s Degree in Advanced Performance. Rachel is a violin tutor at Wells Cathedral School and pursues a busy freelance career in the West of England, working regularly with a number of chamber ensembles, as well as undertaking other solo and orchestral work. Her continuing studies are being funded by the Michael James Music Trust. Rachel plays on a Joseph Klox violin, Mittenwald 1791. Rupert Gough was appointed Assistant Organist of Wells Cathedral in 1994 where he accompanies and assists in directing the nine sung services every week. He appears regularly with the choir in concerts all over the world, on the radio and on many recordings. His cathedral duties are combined with teaching and concert work, and he is the Organ Tutor at Wells Cathedral School. In 1997 he was a finalist in the Royal College of Organists "Performer of the Year" competition, and his first solo recording Popular Organ Music from Wells was selected as Classic FM Magazine’s Critic’s Choice. Rupert gained a Master’s Degree with distinction from the University of East Anglia, researching the music of Jonathan Harvey, and has maintained a keen interest in contemporary music. He has worked closely with a number of composers, most recently commissioning and giving the première of a work by Gabriel Jackson.
