Durán Elena - Flute

Biography of Durán Elena:

Elena Durán was born in California, has lived in England for over twenty years, and has recently achieved tri-nationality by being granted Mexican citizenship. After her initial studies in the Bay Area Elena was appointed Lecturer in Flute at Stanford University. Two years later she resigned this post to resume her studies in Europe, studying with Jean Pierre Rampal, Aurèle Nicolet and James Galway. Using London as her base Elena spent the following years developing a concert career which has taken her all over Europe, the Far East, the United States, South America and Mexico. She has made concerto appearances and recordings with many major orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, Bournemouth Sinfonietta, the Moscow Virtuosi and the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico. In recital Elena has a wide repertoire and has appeared with many distinguished colleagues, most frequently with the pianist Józef Olechowski. She has appeared regularly on television and radio in many countries and has had her own popular radio programme in Mexico "La Flauta Mágica" and recently presented a very successful series of programmes on Classical FM under the title of " Music of the Americas". Apart from a busy concert life in the UK, recent concert tours have taken her to Italy, France, Germany, Russia and Brazil, USA and Mexico. Elena has recorded Delius with Eric Fenby, Bach with Vladimir Spivkov and Mexican Music with Enrique Diemecke. She has also made two albums with legendary Stephane Grappelli as well as a chart-topping single and video with Paul McCartney. Her best selling album, however, is "Viva Elena!", a collection of tunes from Mexico and South America. Elena Durán and pianist-composer Józef Olechowski enjoy one of the most unique and progressive musical partnerships on the concert platform today. They have toured regularly throughout the world and have recently embarked on a series of recordings of which the first is a CD of Mexican ballads Nostalgia for Mexico. Other projects include a series of graded books for Schott & Co. with compositions for flute and piano composed by Józef and edited by Elena. They will also be recording several CDs of Józef's music, written especially for Elena. Elena and Józef have also formed a trio, Trio Latino with cellist Janusz Olechowski and have commissioned a number of new works including "Sarasvarti" by the Anglo-Indian composer, John Mayer and a trio by the Mexican composer Samuel Zyman.
