Biography of Engel Paul:

Paul Engel was born in 1949 in Reutte/Tyrol and is the youngest member of the „Engel family“ which has become world-famous through their concert tours. Even in his younger years he received private tuition as well as tuition at the Innsbruck Conservatory in music theory, piano, violin, flute and conducting. He subsequently studied composition with Günter Bialas and Wilhelm Killmayer, conducting with Jan Koetsier, Fritz Schieri and Wolfgang Winkler and piano with Rosl Schmid and Volker Banfield at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Munich. As an instrumentalist he has worked with various ensembles for early and modern music. He teaches music theory, analysis, listening training and chamber music at the Musikhochschule in Munich. As conductor he has performed in Germany, Austria and abroad. Since 1987 he has been working as a freelance composer and conductor in Munich and Reutte. Paul Engel and his work have won numerous prizes: among other he won the Richard Strauss Prize of the city of Munich, the composition prize at the “Sommerliche Musiktage“ Hitzacker, the first prize of the composition competition of the Jürgen-Ponto-Stiftung, Frankfurt, the promotional prize of the regional capital Munich, the promotional prize of the Ministry for Education and Art, Vienna, and the Tyrolean rgional prize for art. Some of premieres by Paul Engel include: Glade enlightened (Cardiff Festival of Music 1983), 3. Symphonie, Kammersinfonie ‘87 (Salzburg Festival, 1984, 1987), BEGEGNUNG II (Philharmonie Munich 1987), An Jupiter – a homage à W.A.Mozart for the 200th anniversary of his death (National Theatre Munich 1991), the opera DANIEL (text by Herbert Rosendorfer – Munich, Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz 1994), GEDÄCHTNISLANDSCHAFT – five songs for soprano and chamber ensemble (Klangspuren Schwaz 1995), PAN-TASIEN for solo flute and chamber orchestra (Philharmonie Cologne 1997), the chamber opera Boehlendorff (text by Ursula Haas based on Johannes Bobrowsky - Nordsee-Orgelfestival, Cuxhaven 1998), HANNIBALS ELEPHANTEN for a large orchestra (Congress Innsbruck 1999).
