Light Music

"Marching and Waltzing" was the title of a BBC radio programme around forty years ago which followed a simple formula which proved popular with listeners. Quite simply it featured a selection of melodious music alternating between marches and waltzes, yet anyone thinking that this would result in a rather predictable sequence of similar-sounding pieces was soon proved wrong. Talented composers and imaginative arrangers can transform any tune into something special, no matter what kind of basic rhythm it may possess. Eric Coates once famously said that his marches weren't intended for marching, and his waltzes weren't intended for waltzing, and many other musicians clearly take the same view. But for those who still like to hear such works at the usual tempo there are examples among the many varied styles in this collection.
