With his latest jazz album, 'The Swingin' Bassoon', Daniel Smith demonstrates to those familiar with his career that he does indeed swing on this difficult and unwieldy instrument. The world’s most recorded bassoon soloist, Daniel Smith is acclaimed in the world of classical music for his award- winning set of the complete 37 Vivaldi bassoon concertos, along with numerous other classical and crossover albums. In 2006, Smith amazed listeners with his album Bebop Bassoon, on which he performed compositions by Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and other jazz legends. Critics were virtually unanimous in their praise; the album received over 50 outstanding reviews and extensive airplay world-wide. In a genre where having one’s own sound is of paramount importance, Smith can truly lay claim to possessing a unique voice in jazz along with his classical skills. On 'The Swingin’ Bassoon', Smith is once again joined by the same outstanding rhythm section that accompanied him on his bebop album. Pianist Martin Bejerano, best known for his tenure with the great Roy Haynes Quartet, is a leader in his own right; his latest album, 'Evolution/Revolution', is on the Reservoir label. John Sullivan recorded and performed regularly with Bejerano in the Haynes’ band and is well known on the New York jazz scene for his solid bass work. Cuban born drummer Ludwig Afonso, who originally made his mark on the international music scene with the inventive fusion group Spyro Gyra, has recorded with Bejerano and Latin Jazz percussionist Sammy Figueroa.Through the past years, a number of truly innovative talents have introduced new instruments to the jazz genre. The flute, violin, French horn, bass clarinet, and harmonica were all originally thought to be unsuited to the idiom, but eventually found important roles to play in the right hands. Having done more than any other musician to champion the bassoon in the world of classical music, Daniel Smith has now brought the bassoon into the world of jazz as well, proudly adding it to the category which Downbeat magazine refers to as 'miscellaneous instruments' in its yearly polls.
