Stokowski Leopold - Conductor

Biography of Stokowski Leopold:

The career of Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) was both long and colourful, but these factors ought not to detract from the demonstrable fact that he was one of the great conductors of the twentieth-century. His longevity meant that he was born when Wagner was still alive and lived to see James MacMillan begin his studies at Edinburgh University, so the range of music available to Stokowski throughout his career was vast. He retained the widest musical interests, not only in the newest art music, but also in music of a wide and avowedly popular appeal.
A glance at Stokowski?s immense discography certainly reveals the extent of those interests, and in this collection of music from the lighter part of the orchestral repertoire we pay tribute to the conductor?s interest in music which, for whatever reasons, did not always appeal to his equally eminent contemporaries, but which, in Stokowski?s hands, can certainly be said to have elicited from the orchestras he conducted a professionalism and musicality that enabled these pieces to be presented to his audiences at home, over the air, and in the concert hall in the best possible light.
