The St Gallen Chamber Ensemble is a string ensemble formed in 1980, whose members are a mixture of professional musicians, music students and excellent amateurs. This integration of professionals and amateurs is only possible through mutual trust, co-operation and hard-working rehearsals. The professional leader and principals fulfil an educational role in the preparation of the amateur musicians, who in turn commit themselves to continuing their musical training. In its concerts The St Gallen Chamber Ensemble presents works from all periods and music of the 20th century has a regular place in its programmes. Young talented musicians often get a chance to gain valuable experience as soloists with the orchestra, which also often appears with well known musicians such as John Holloway, Thomas Füri, Rosmarie Hofmann, Charles Daniels, Hansheinz Schneeberger and Peter Waters. Because of their high standard and adventurous programmes the concerts of the St Gallen Chamber Ensemble attract much attention. Recent successes have included, in 1995, a "Night Concert" of Bach's "St John Passion" with the English tenor Charles Daniels as the Evangelist and the young Basle choir "Ensemble Vocales Basilienses", and the 1996 broadcast on Swiss Radio DRS 2 of the orchestral programme "Concerto Grosso", a concert given as part of the three day homage to the Swiss composer Raffaele d'Alessandro, which the Ensemble promoted.
