Richter Ernst Friedrich (1808-1879)

Biography of Richter Ernst Friedrich:

An older contemporary of Rheinberger was Ernst Friedrich Eduard Richter, known principally as a musical theorist, who was born at Großschönau, Saxony in 1808. He died in Leipzig in 1879, where in the last eleven years of his life he was cantor of the Thomasschule in Leipzig as one of JS Bach’s successors. Richter is best known for his theoretical works, which came to be criticised by Arnold Schoenberg in the first decade of the 20th-century, but there is no denying the genuine expressive content of Richter’s short chorale-prelude fantasy Wie schön leucht’ uns der Morgenstern Opus 20, a contemplation on the reference to the ‘bright morning star’ in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 22, verse 16.
