Corrette Michel (1707-1795)

Biography of Corrette Michel:

We begin with the Preludio Grand jeu, from Michel Corrette’s ‘First Organ Book’ (Premier Livre d’Orgue) which was published in Paris in 1737 when Corrette was just 30. His father Gaspard was also an organist and composer, and Michel’s natural musical gifts were strongly encouraged as a boy. Michel Corrette lived to be 87, and composed prolifically in a wide rage, including teaching manuals which in their detailed instructions give much insight into performance practices of the era. Although Corette wrote much music for teaching purposes, such was his natural fluency and invention as a composer that there is always an attractive melodic aspect to all of his music, as we hear in this delightful Prelude.
