Rainer Held studied at the University of Zurich and the University of Music in Lucerne. He completed his studies in choral and orchestral conducting, solo singing and school music. He subsequently studied and participated in master classes in Austria, Russia and Japan. He is active on the Swiss and European choral scene (he is President of the Music Commission of the Swiss Choral Association and a member of the music commission of the European Choral Association, ‘Europa Cantat’). From 1998 to 2007 he ran a choral conducting course at the Lucerne University of Music. Prof. Rainer Held today lectures at the University of Teacher Education of Central Switzerland in Lucerne, where he is also head of the Music Department. From 2003 to 2010 he was First Guest Conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Minsk, where his activities included conducting a complete cycle of all the symphonies and solo concertos of Beethoven. In 2008 he began a fruitful, highly successful collaboration with the Chamber Orchestra of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic. Rainer Held has conducted in Switzerland (the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Aargau Symphony Orchestra, the Zurich Symphonic Orchestra and many others), in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia and Japan. He has enjoyed numerous engagements as a coach for choirs and conductors, and his many invitations to be a member on expert juries at choral, orchestral and composition competitions at home and abroad round off his broad spectrum of activities as a conductor. His large repertoire extends from the Baroque era to the present day, ranging from a cappella literature to oratorios, from symphonies to choral symphonies.
