This recording is a rare example of a live recording of a concert performance, conducted by Karl Rankl. It is part of a larger collection of broadcast recordings of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra made by Radio Rot-Weiss-Rot, the allied-controlled Austrian national radio after World War II and predecessor of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF). These tapes were only discovered about a decade ago and are, judging from this particular tape, of exemplary recording quality. This broadcast, a matinee performance recorded in the Golden Hall of Vienna’s Musikverein on 23 January 1954, was part of the radio station’s own concert series.
