Clare College Chapel Choir - Choir

Biography of Clare College Chapel Choir:

Music has played an increasingly important role in the life of Clare College, and particularly so since the creation of a mixed voice choir in 1971. The choir has gained a wide reputation for excellence and is regarded as one of the leading university choral groups in the United Kingdom. The choir's normal complement is eight sopranos, four altos, four tenors and six basses and it is conducted by a senior Director of Music who is a Fellow of the College, assisted by a junior undergraduate Organ Scholar. Clare College Choir exists primarily to sing choral services three times each week during full term in the College chapel, but in addition gives regular concerts both at home and abroad as well as contributing to the Choral Evensongs and Sequences broadast on BBC Radio. Under the direction of Timothy Brown, it has undertaken many overseas tours, especially to Italy and to the United States. In 1983 the choir was awarded the Gran Premio 'Citta d'Arrezo' at the 31st Intemational Choral Competition in Arezzo. In 1985 it participated in the Bach-Handel tercentenary celebrations in both England and Germany, and in 1991 performed in the Cambridge Mozart Festival. In September 1991 the choir visited the Soviet Union for the first time.
