Biography of Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir:

The Estonian Philharmonic Chmaber Choir was founded in 1981 by Tõnu Kaljuste, who acted as artistic director and chief conductor for 20 years. Since September 2001 this position has been taken on by the English conductor Paul Hillier. The repertoire of the choir ranges from the musical literature of Gregorian chants to late baroque and 20th century music. It includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach and contemporary composers, as well as Estonian choral music. The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (EPCC) has worked with many well-known conductors, including among others Claudio Abbado, Hellmuth Rilling, Eric Ericson, Martin Haselböck, Ivan Fisher, Ward Swingle. Concert tours have taken the Choir through all of Europe as well as to the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia. The Choir has also made numerous recordings for various broadcasting and recording companies. The Choir’s recordings for ECM (ECM NEW Series) and Virgin Classics included works by Veljo Tormis, Arvo Pärt and Erkki-Sven Tüür. All these recordings have received very high recognition by leading music critics and musical magazines from all over the world. Four CDs were nominated for the The Recordings Academy Grammy Awards. Recently the EPCC and the Tallin Chamber Orchestra released two CDs for Carus with music by Mozart. For the near future the recording of several CDs with the title “Baltic Voices” for Harmonica Mundi with their chief conductor Paul Hillier have been planned.
