Korth Nicholas - Horn

Biography of Korth Nicholas:

Nicholas Korth grew up in Sussex and attended Michael Hall Steiner school, where he was encouraged to compose music for several plays. In 1987 he moved to Germany to study the horn at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg before returning to this country to attend the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is currently Co-Principal horn with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, having held other positions in prominent orchestras at home and abroad. Nicholas has had commissions from the English Eurythmy Theatre, who toured extensively in the USA and Europe with his works The Winds of Time (1993), and Storm's Child (1995). In 1999 he wrote Harmoniae Naturales I, a concerto for horn and orchestra, in which he appeared as soloist with the Jupiter Chamber Orchestra. His position as horn player and 'in-house composer' with Conchord has led to a burgeoning catalogue of compositions, including the chamber works Patten Settings, This Compost and the song cycle War's Embers which was premiered by the tenor James Gilchrist at the Wigmore Hall in 2004. His setting of Housmans' Loveliest of Trees was featured on BBC Radio 3's In Tune prior to a performance at the 2003 Chichester Festival. Nicholas draws inspiration from nature and poetry, and has developed a fascination with the natural harmonic series which he now uses extensively in his work.
